Mr. James Hill Maddox age 89 of Sulligent, AL died Monday, March 21, 2011 at the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield, AL. James Hill was born in Lamar County to the late Walter and Lona Hill Maddox. He was a graduate of Sulligent High School and went on to the University of Alabama, where he received a Bachelors Degree. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sulligent, where he served in many leadership rolls such as, Deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years, as well as serving faithfully on the many church committees and he enjoyed the Christian unity of the many men and women of the church. He became owner of Maddox Brothers Ford dealership in 1944 to making the 2nd generation of the Maddox family to own and operate the dealership in which he changed the name as most of us knew it, Maddox Motor Company. Which, along with Maddox Oil Company and Maddox Tractor and Equipment Company were formed in 1926. When the family sold Maddox Motor Company in 1990 it was the oldest Ford dealership in Alabama still in the same family. He also was a very community minded man and cared deeply for Sulligent and Lamar County, he served on the Sulligent City Council, on several Sulligent High School Committees, was a member on the First National Bank Board, Chairman of the Lamar County Democratic Committee, served on the Industrial Recruiting committee, and was a Delegate for the National Democratic Convention in 1956. James Hill enjoyed his leisure time with his family and friends, Alabama Football and his passion of flying. Survived by his Wife: Mary Alice Matthews Maddox of Sulligent, AL, Two Sons: Dr. James Stephen Maddox and his Wife Bonnie of Montgomery, AL and William (Billy) McConnell Maddox and his Wife Jill of Sulligent, AL, Six Grandchildren: Dr. Mary Halsey de Idiaquez and her Husband who is also Physician Dr. Diego de Idiaquez of Birmingham, AL, Mitchell Maddox of Athens, GA, Marston Maddox and his Wife Anna of Nashville, TN, Bennett Maddox of Birmingham, AL, Justin Maddox of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Courtney Maddox of Charlotte, NC, Two Great Grandchildren: Alonso and Virginia de Idiaquez and a Host of Nieces and Nephews. Services held Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 2:00 PM from the First Baptist Church of Sulligent, AL with burial in the Sulligent City Cemetery. Bro Jeff Chaffin and Bro. Byron Pickering officiating. His body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 PM just prior to the service time. Visitation: Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from 6-8 PM at the Funeral Home. Pallbearers: Justin Maddox, Mitchell Maddox, Marston Maddox, Bennett Maddox, Walter Richard Beaver, Bobby Beaver and Dr. Diego de Idiaquez.
