Mr. Lawrence O. Porter, age 92 of Fayette, died Monday, August 22, 2011 at Fayette Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Friday August 26th at 11:00 a.m. at Norwood Chapel with Bro. David Wilson and Bro. Robert Cobb officiating. Graveside service with military honors will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Union Grove Baptist Cemetery in Romulus, AL. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Norwood Chapel. Mr. Porter was born April 24, 1919 in Fayette, the son of the late D.B. Porter and May Jinkins Porter. He was a resident of Fayette for the past six years and a former resident of Northport for over sixty years. He is a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army and served with General George Patton in the Tank Battalion during D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of the Silver Star medal. Mr. Porter retired from the Foundry in Tuscaloosa after thirty six years. He was a member of the New Beginnings Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Nell Porter, one son, Murry Franklin Porter, two brothers, Billy Porter and Don Porter; two sisters, Arbelle Dooley and Jewel Trimm. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Thomason Porter of Fayette; two sons, Larry Steven Porter of Northport and Jerry (Bonnie) Thomason of Fayette; one daughter, Faye (Stanley) Beavers of Fayette; two sisters, Jimmie Nell Mills of Fayette and Hazel Cargile of Northport; one brother, Johnny Porter of TN; four grandchildren, Keith (Shelli) Thomason of Helena; Stephanie Thomason of Fayette; Michael (Peggy) Beavers of Fayette and Scott (Ginger) Beavers of Northport; twelve great grandchildren, Kaylee, Klaire, Tyler, Thekla, Julie, Sally Kate, Hannah, Mallory, Jackson, Paige, Gracie and Ethan; special friends Leon and Charlene Hamner. Pallbearers are Barney Dooley, Bobby Mills, Tommy Mills, Roger Cargile, Randy Cargile and William Newman. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Martha Jo Christian and Staff and the Staff of Fayette Medical Center.
