Morris Roberts

d. December 27, 2011

Morris Roberts, 89 of Fayette, AL passed away at his home Tuesday, December 27, 2011. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 29th at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Elder Marshall Crim officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Mr. Roberts was a native of Winfield, Alabama, born the 4th of five children to William Howard and Sudie Thompson Roberts, Sr. on July 19, 1922. He was a veteran of World War II, participating in the Phillipines invasion and the invasion of Okinowa. He served his country well. He married the former Martha Matthews of Fayette in 1950 and they made their first home together in Fayette, their last home here on earth. A daughter, Alice Ann, born Feb. 26, 1958, lived only one day. Mr. Roberts and his bride, whom he cherished above else, had a wonderful marriage and he missed her greatly following her sudden passing in 1986. Even so, he maintained throughout his life, a remarkable capacity to keep things simple, appreciate the lighter side of life, and maintain a great passion for a few things he deemed worthy of extra time. One of these, perhaps lesser known, was his work with Carpenters for Christ. The other, much better known, was his undying and unyielding love of Auburn University in general, and Auburn football in particular. Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his wife, Martha, parents, William Howard & Sudie Roberts, Sr. and siblings, William Howard, Jr., Louise, Milton, and Roy F. Roberts, Sr. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Mary Alice Maddox of Sulligent and Wynelle Matthews of Mobile, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. A special thank you of love and appreciation is given to Janice Wright for her steadfastness of love and devotion in caring for Mr. Roberts since March of 2008. Pallbearers will be Kevin Roberts, Brad Roberts, Bart McConnell, William Hamm, David Roberts, Franklin Roberts and Frank Roberts.
