Mrs. Bettye Chandler Poe, age 87 of Fayette, died Monday, March 12, 2012 at Fayette Long Term Care. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16th at 2:00 p.m. at Norwood Chapel with the Rev. Eric Bagwell officiating. Burial will follow in Fayette Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Mrs. Poe was born April 12, 1924 in Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Elmer and Nell Durham Abele. She was a resident of Fayette since the late 1940’s. She graduated from Huntington College in 1942. Mrs. Poe was a member of the Fayette First United Methodist Church and was active in many local civic clubs including Fayette Garden Club, Progress Club II and Kiwanis Club. She was formerly employed with the State of Alabama Dept. of Pensions and Security until her retirement. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Joe Palmer Chandler and V.W. (Dick) Poe. Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Chandler of St. Louis, MO; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Chandler (Horace) Berry of Fayette and Eleanor Chandler Graves of Demopolis and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Kerry Kerr, Jimmy Campbell, Stephen Fowler, Jr., Jim Berry and Bill Robertson.
