Dr. John W. Stamps, age 79 of Fayette, died Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Hospice of West Alabama. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Blake Thompson, Rev. Max Stripling and Rev. Luke Stamps officiating. Burial will be in the Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Dr. Joe Bob Mizzell will officiate the graveside service. The visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. Dr. Stamps was born March 3, 1934 in Fayette, the son of the late James Fletcher and Rhoda Milner Hankins Stamps. He graduated from Fayette High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956. He graduated from the Ouachita Valley Vo-Tech College in 1960. He received his Bachelor of Bible Subjects, Master of Ministry, and Doctorate of Theology from International Bible Institute and Seminary. Bro. John preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ and served many churches in Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker and Tuscaloosa Counties and also served in Florida. He celebrated 50 years in the ministry April 2012. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Avis Stamps; one son, Michael Stamps and grandson, Aaron Stamps. Survivors include two sons, Robert (Lisa) Stamps of Winfield and Steve (Lora) Stamps of Fayette; daughter-in-law Shirley Stamps of Fayette; six grandchildren, Leslie (Bart) Box, Zack (Angela) Stamps, Robert Lucas (Josie) Stamps, Jeannie (Terry) Aldridge, Cassie Stamps and Seth (Lacy) Stamps; twelve great grandchildren; Tristan, Rachel, Jonathan, Abigail, Isaac James, Jack, Claire, Henry, Eli, Eden, Lila and Cale; one brother, James Curtis (Sandy) Stamps of Tuscaloosa; one sister, Rhonda Faye (Earl) Bland of Fayette. Active pallbearers are Zack Stamps, Luke Stamps, Seth Stamps, Bart Box, Terry Aldridge, Tommy Bynum, Jimmy Stamps and Ricky Meador. Honorary pallbearers are Great-Grandsons, Members of Musgrove Chapel Church, Wayside Community Church, and Calvary Baptist Church. Norwood Chapel directing.
