John Doyle Simmons, age 81 passed away February 13, 2017 at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Fayette First Free Will Baptist Church, officiating will be ministers, Scott Montgomery and Adrian Nottonson. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Norwood-Wyatt Chapel. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow at Fayette Memorial Gardens. Mr. Simmons was born in Fayette County September 9, 1935, the son of the late Horace Simmons and Ada Nichols Simmons. He was formally a resident of Tuscaloosa County. He returned to Fayette in 1946. He and his wife were co-owners of Simmons Sewing Center for over thirty years. He was a member of Fayette First Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Henderson Simmons of Fayette; two sons, Steve (Amy) Simmons of Tuscaloosa and Randy (Beth) Simmons of Northport; one brother, Dale (Jean) Simmons of Fayette; six grandchildren, Cal Simmons, Cricket (Casey) Fortner, Jessica Simmons, Stephen Simmons, Staci Simmons and Shane Simmons; and two great-grandchildren, Brooks Simmons and Cam Fortner. Pallbearers will be Ross Henderson, Miles Henderson, David Hindman, Rob Hindman, Zac Hindman, John Moore, Drew Moore and Jamie Ballard. Honorary pallbearers are the Fayette County High class of 1954. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of West Alabama and Fayette First Free Will Baptist Church.
