Carolyn Susan Newman, lovingly known as Susan, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on July 31, 1948, in Luverne, Alabama, Susan brought light and joy to everyone she met.

Susan was the beloved wife of Don Ray Newman, with whom she shared a lifetime of love, adventure, and faith. She was a devoted mother to her son, Jeffrey Ray Newman, and his wife, Lauren Ray Newman. Her grandchildren, Jacob Ray Newman and Wesley Ray Newman, were the pride and joy of her life.

Susan was the cherished daughter of the late Howard E. Battles and Carolyn Grace Battles, who instilled in her a love for family, faith, and creativity. She is also survived by her sisters, Jane Goold (Jack) and Patsy Luckie (Thomas), and her sister-in-law, Gail Medley. She was preceded in death by her brother, Howard Battles, whom she held close to her heart. In addition to her immediate family, Susan leaves behind a host of beloved nieces and nephews who adored her and will forever cherish her memory.

Susan’s life was a testament to her love for Jesus Christ, and she expressed that love through her art. She had a remarkable talent for creating beauty from the ordinary, transforming broken glass, rusty nails, and scrap wood into stunning works of art. Her creations, particularly crosses and Christmas ornaments, were a reflection of her deep faith and creativity.

She had a profound impact on her community, tirelessly raising funds for local schools' art programs when funding was scarce. Susan believed in the power of art to inspire and uplift, and her efforts ensured countless young artists had the resources they needed to pursue their passions.

Every summer, Susan and Don would escape to the breathtaking landscapes of Ouray, Colorado, where she found solace and inspiration in nature. She loved hiking the trails, forging lasting friendships, and collecting materials for her art along the way. Ouray held a special place in her heart, and she cherished the memories made there with her loved ones.

Susan’s life was a masterpiece of faith, family, and generosity. She touched the lives of many with her kindness, her artistic spirit, and her unwavering love for those around her.

A celebration of Susan’s life will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, located at 830 County Road 105, Fayette, AL 35555. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m.
