Dennis Ray Watkins, 66, of Fayette, AL, a beloved husband, devoted father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2023, at Hospice of West Alabama. With a big heart and infectious sense of humor, Dennis leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment among countless family members, friends, and colleagues.
Dennis was born on September 14, 1956, to Raymon Watkins and Betty Gray Bryant in Chicago, IL. At a young age, he moved to the Fayette area where he spent most of his life. As a young man, Dennis began working for St. Bunn, and spent his entire career in the asphalt and concrete business. With diligence and expertise, he contributed greatly to the industry, leaving his mark on countless projects and endeavors around the community of Fayette for decades, until his retirement. His commitment to hard work earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and peers alike.
Most notably, Dennis exemplified a deep love and commitment to family. In 1977 he married the love of his life, Sherry Glasgow Watkins, and as a loving husband, he devoted his entire life. As a proud father, he was a source of inspiration, guidance and unending love to his two daughters, Elizabeth Hardin (James Hardin) and Meagan Collins, a role he embraced with joy and devotion, always imparting wisdom and support. As a loveable grandfather, Dennis beamed with pride as he watched his grandchildren, Abby and Brock Hardin (who called him D.W.) and Hayden Collins (who called him Bubbles), make their mark on this world. As a little brother, Dennis was a lifelong best friend to his sister, Debora Campbell. In addition, Dennis is survived by his nephew and niece, Brian and Tricia Fortenberry, and their children Devan, Andrew, and Anthony Fortenberry, all who held a special place in his heart, and his beloved dog, Bruno.
Dennis leaves a rich legacy of love, laughter, and fond memories, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, let us remember the love he shared, the lessons he taught, and the impact he made on the lives he touched.
