On Wednesday, May 18, 2022, Elizabeth Thompson Wright, transitioned from this world to her eternal rest. She was born on June 26, 1931 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to loving parents, Rev. J. H. Thompson and Fannie V. Thompson. Services will be Friday, May 27, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Roderiek Sheppard officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Fayette Memorial Gardens. Elizabeth confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and united with First Baptist Church in Fayette, Alabama. Elizabeth graduated from Fayette County Training School (later named West Highland High School) and was Valedictorian of her class. She later attended Alabama State University but completed her post-secondary education at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Elizabeth taught over 27 years in the Fayette County School System. She entered into Holy Matrimony with the love of her life, Arthur Will (Skin) Wright in 1952. She loved God, her church, her family, her community, and loved sports. Elizabeth was a dedicated and faithful member of First Baptist where she served as Sunday School Superintendent for over 50 years, Bible Teacher of Circle No. 2 and General Missionary Society (32 years), Teacher in the Church School, Member of the Usher Board, Directress of the B.T.U. and Counselor of Junior Mission. She served on the following: Alabama State S.S. and B.T.U., Congress Enrollment Committee, Alabama State Women’s Convention Registration Committee where she served five years as chairman and was chairman emeritus for years, Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Northwest State District Women’s Convention, 10 years Vice-president of the Canaan-Pickensville District Women’s Convention; 10 years as President of the Canaan-Pickensville District Women’s Convention; Instructor in the Canaan-Pickensville District Congress of Christian Education, Secretary of the District Trustee Board, President of the Christian Benevolent Society of Fayette, Marion, and Lamar Counties, Secretary of the Canaan-Pickensville District Association Finance Committee, Counselor of the District Women’s Sunbeams, Overall Counselor of Programs of the District, Secretary of the Finance Committee of the Canaan-Pickensville S. S. and B.T.U. Congress, Counselor of the Deacon, Deaconess and Trustee Wives of the District. She served as Chairman of the Patrons Committee of the Centennial Souvenir Book and served on the ARC Board of Fayette, Lamar, and Marion Counties. Elizabeth received the Community Service award from the Alabama State Classroom Teacher Association. She received the special achievement award from the Fayette County Chapter A.D.C. in 2006 and was inducted in in the Fayette County Sports Hall of Fame. She also worked the voting polls for many, many years. In her retirement, Elizabeth enjoyed attending church, spending time with her family, attending sporting events and traveling with her family, reading and playing games on her tablet. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty-eight years, Arthur Will (Skin) Wright; two brothers: Joseph and Pank Thompson; two sisters: Lula Mary Garrett and Vandella Davis and her beloved parents, Rev. J. H. and Fannie V. Thompson. Elizabeth leaves to cherish many wonderful memories, her beloved children: James Wright (Ginger), Beverly McCollum (Fred) Whitfield, Cedric Wright, Donna Wright; grandchildren: LaSheka (Keith) Everson, Ronnie McCollum (Miek), Kenderick Wilson (Paige), Alexandra Wright, Keyshawn, Victoria, and Latricia Hughes; three great grandchildren: Lina, Eric, and Bryce; two sisters: Dorothy Sheppard and Nancy Thompson; one brother-in-law, Wardell Wright; three sisters-in-law: Sarah Mack Cannon, Betty Thompson, and Gusta Wright and a HOST of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and MANY “adopted” sisters, daughters, and sons.
