Evalina W. Hughes, age 74 of Fayette AL, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Diversicare of Winfield. Services for Mrs. Hughes will be Friday, February 21, 2025, at Norwood-Wyatt Chapel, at 1:00 p.m. She will lie in state one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow at Bankhead Cemetery. Rev. Carlos Moore will be officiating the service. Norwood-Wyatt Chapel will be directing the service.
Evalina Wright was born March 3rd, 1950, in Fayette, Alabama, to Harold and Willie Mack Wright. She was the second of their three children. She was preceded in death by her father in 1989 and her mother in 2003. On February 16, 2025, we lost a kind and gentle soul -- a quality person. But when she was pushed past her limits, she would not hesitate to fight back regardless of her small stature.
Evalina graduated from West Highland High School in 1968. She excelled academically and participated in many school organizations and activities including being a flutist in the marching band and concert band. She was one of the original members of the dance group Hornarettes.
Immediately following graduation, she married William R. White, Jr. (deceased 10/2024) and from that union was two sons William R. White, III (Little Bill/Dude) and Kevin L. White. Dude and his son Joshua preceded them in death. Later, she married Howey Neal Hughes of Fayette, Alabama.
Evalina began her Christian journey at a very early age. She was baptized and became a member of the Peaceful Rest Baptist Church and was very active as a youth and young adult. Later, she moved her membership to the St. James C.M.E. Church where her love for music was exemplified in her devoted participation in the choir. That alto voice added a special harmony.
Her work experience included many years with Fayette Garment Plant, Delta Apparel, and Onieta Industries.
Evalina leaves to cherish her memory and honor her life: husband, Howey Neal Hughes, son, Kevin White of Fayette, Alabama, step-children, Britnee Hughes George (Christopher) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Jamarcus Hughes of Royce City, Texas, siblings, Elease W. Jolley of Nashville, Tennessee and Donald R. Wright of Richmond, Texas, aunts, Peggy Haley (James) of Berry, Alabama and Ruby Smith of Fayette, Alabama, four grandchildren, Xavier White, Xeryus White, Xandrea White, and Ky White, three great-grandchildren, two nieces, Khalisha Jolley and Xandelyn Wright Washington, two nephews, Everett Jolley and Vandy Jolley IV (Victoria), six great nieces, three great nephews, and a multitude of cousins and friends with special note of her long time neighbors Stevie and Mary Sparks.
We are going to miss Lina and those special pancakes.
