James "Jimmy" Hoffman Gullett Sr.

James “Jimmy” Hoffman Gullett, Senior, age 97, passed away on Wednesday, August 07, 2024, at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 12, 2024, at Fayette City Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Chris Herbert will officiate the service. Norwood-Wyatt Chapel will be directing the arrangements.

Mr. Gullett is preceded in death by his parents, George Harris and Ann Hoffman Gullett; his wife, Sara Davis Gullett; his brother, George Harris Gullett, Junior; and his son, James Hoffman Gullett, Junior.

He is survived by his daughter, Ann Gullett (Keith) Martin of Auburn, Alabama; granddaughter, Sara Martin (Trey) Denney; great-granddaughter, Nora-Ann Grace Denney of Boulder, Colorado; nieces Harriet Davis Krueger of California and Nancy Davis Hays of Georgia; grandniece Sara Elizabeth Hays; and grandnephew Matthew Davis Hays.

Mr. Gullett was born on February 28, 1927, in Fayette, Alabama. He graduated from Fayette County High School in 1945. After graduation, he was drafted and completed 17 weeks of training in Florida before embarking on a military journey with the 31st Division on a troopship headed for Tokyo. As a truck driver, he transported decommissioned weapons, including rifles and samurai swords, and witnessed the aftermath of the atomic bomb in Japan. Mr. Gullett returned to the U.S. in December 1946 and started his collegiate studies at the University of Alabama. He later transferred to Emory University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business finance in 1950. After graduating, Mr. Gullett moved back to Fayette, Alabama, where he met and married Sara Davis Gullett.

Mr. Gullett owned the family business, Gullett’s Department Store, a clothing and shoe store in downtown Fayette, and served on the Fayette City Council from 1968 to 1992. He was a pivotal part of the Fayette community for many years and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

The family deeply appreciates the loving care that Linda Waldrip and Scottie Porter have provided to Jimmy over the years.
