Ray attended Newtonville Elementary School and progressed on to West Highland High School. He completed his high school career at Fayette County High School, graduating in 1970.
After high school, Ray continued his pursuit of higher education by completing two years at Florence State University, which is now known as the University of North Alabama.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1972. While in the military, he earned the rank of Sergeant and worked his way up to being a supervisor of a computer program unit. He lived in many different countries and embraced their culture. He completed a college course in three different countries. He retired from the military in 1982.
He went on to attend the University of Alabama after retiring, and in 1985 he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems/Management. He gained employment at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS as a supervisor of computer programming systems.
He retired from the public sector in 1987 because of a decline in health and challenges surrounding his mother’s death.
In 1984, Velma Sudduth and Rayfield Broughton, Jr. joined and a son was born. He was named Tavaris. Ray was a proud, caring, and devoted father. His parents Vaudene and Lee A. Wright shared faithfully in their grandson’s care. Very “over the top” grandparents.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Vaudene and Lee A. Wright, Rayfield Broughton Sr., and his maternal grandparents, Mozella and Sammie “Sam” Nalls, Sr., who with affection, he called Momma and Daddy. With Rayfield being their first grandchild, they embellished him in every, Grand “greater than”, way. Also preceding him in death was his paternal grandfather, Lee Wright, who he called “Pa Lee” who shared in the care of Rayfield, along with four maternal aunts, three maternal uncles, five paternal uncles, and four paternal aunts, one being his special aunt, Odie Dover. They all supported his greatness and loved him beyond reproach.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his son Tavaris (Seketha) Sudduth, three grandsons: Tavaris, Jacob, and Kingston; two step-grandchildren: Makyian and Janiya; a cousin closer than a brother, friend, and supporter, Matthew (Pat) Whiteside; his advocator, caring, and loving aunt Wanda Nalls Lockett; his devoted aunt, Sarah Cannon, and his admiring little sisters/cousins, Sammie (Lester) Walker and LaVone (Steve) Yarbrough. He also leaves behind many devoted cousins and a multitude of family and friends.
