Richard Michael Slattery, age 80 of Northport, passed away Friday, January 14, 2022. There will a memorial service Thursday, January 20, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church columbarium. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Joseph Slattery and Annette Callanan Slattery; and sister, Mary Elizabeth Slattery. Mr. Slattery is survived by his wife, Evelyn “Lyn” Warren Slattery; daughters, Katherine “Katie” Slattery Oblinger (Ashley) and Jennifer Ryan Slattery; brother, Peter Mark Slattery; and grandson, Camden Michael Oblinger. Richard “Dick” Slattery was born in Buffalo, NY in 1941 to Annette and Robert Slattery. He attended St. Benedict's Grammar School, Canisius High School, and Canisius College. After graduating from college in 1965, he spent the next few years teaching at Bishop Neumann High School and coaching JV baseball. After his time at Bishop Neumann, he joined the Marines serving as the Fire Direction Officer of Golf Battery, 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines at FSB Ross South Vietnam, rising to the rank of Captain. Upon returning from war, he relocated to Montgomery, AL to teach JROTC at Jeff Davis High School where he met his wife and fellow teacher. They were married in 1973. It was in Montgomery that he started his family. He, Lyn, and his daughters moved to Northport, AL in 1979, where he lived the rest of his life.
