Susie Jane Edwards

Susie Jane Edwards, age 76 of Fayette passed away Friday, December 24, 2021 at DCH Medical Center. Services will be Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Norwood-Wyatt Chapel with Billy Carl Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow the service at Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Susie was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Joe Edwards; her parents, Albert and Estelle Green; and her brother, Charles Green. Survivors include her daughter, Amy Edwards McGuff; sisters, Rosie Bean (Harold); Nell Englebert, and Mary Elizabeth Vaughn (Sheldon); brother, Cleo Green (Wanda); grandchildren, Linley Mitchell (Greg), Will McGuff, and Megan McGuff; and great-grandchildren, Melina Rahming, Keith Mitchell, Nyriah Walker, and Braxton Walker. Mrs. Susie Edwards was hired by the ARC of Fayette and Lamar Counties as a secretary and driver on January 15, 1981. She left the agency in 1987 and was employed as a local insurance agent with Modern Woodmen Insurance Company. Mrs. Edwards returned to the ARC as a fulltime employee on September 14, 1988. Over the next 33 years, she served in many capacities for the agency. Her many titles included van driver, secretary, administrative assistant, special Olympics coordinator, interim executive director, residential services director, HUD program coordinator and program assistant. The HUD program coordinator and program assistant positions were combined over the past 14 years. She provided assistance to the executive director in many areas, which included but not limited to, chairing the committee on safety and quality improvement and conducting internal investigations for the agency. Mrs. Edwards was diligent in advocating for the highest quality of life and community inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She will be missed by each person that received services from the agency and all the employees. Pallbearers will be Stanley Rushing, Charles Beard, Phillip Rushing, Scott Rushing, Dale Whitley, and Wayne Nelson. Honorary pallbearers are past and present employees of The Arc of Fayette/Lamar/Marengo Counties and Sheldon Vaughn. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Wesley Chapel Cemetery Fund.
